A Fox News reporter provided a live account of a chaotic protest against immigration and customs enforcement at a detention center in New Jersey.
Demonstrators voiced concerns over the conditions at the ICE facility located in Newark, where detainees have purportedly been on a hunger strike since Friday.
On Tuesday, tensions reached a peak, catching the attention of Fox News.
“I’m not exactly the favorite reporter for ICE protests, so brace yourselves,” stated reporter Alexis McAdams.
“Then you have individuals like these protesters who come here and aren’t holding back on their language.”
A woman in the crowd appeared to shout, “You’re the worst!” in McAdams’s direction.
“Alright! So this is the scene we’re facing,” McAdams replied.
“This is their usual routine. They seem to want to release individuals who are living here illegally onto the streets.”
A protester then yelled, “You’re a fucking Nazi!”
“That’s quite an articulate argument,” Fox host Will Cain commented back in the studio.
The footage of the exchange quickly circulated on social media.
Protesters are alleging that federal officials are neglecting detainees’ medical requests and that the living conditions are terrible, with reports of poor food contributing to illnesses. On the previous day, some demonstrators attempted to block vehicles from departing the center, leading to a confrontation where staff used pepper spray.
The Department of Homeland Security has refuted the claims regarding the facility’s conditions.
Activist Catalina Adorno shared troubling accounts, stating, “We’ve heard of people receiving spoiled frozen food, and last week, there were reports of live bugs in their meals. Some have even been denied basic supplies like toilet paper.”
The private facility in Delaney Hall accommodates around 300 detainees and houses roughly 1,000 beds. Detainees have access to tablets for outside communication.
