Protesters Break into ICE Vehicles — Minneapolis Police Hold Back

Violence Erupts in Minneapolis Amid Police Inaction

A chaotic scene unfolded Wednesday night in Minneapolis, where rioters, feeling emboldened, violently attacked an ICE vehicle. They broke into a weapons locker, making off with rifles and ammunition. Video footage circulating online shows a tattooed individual attempting to carry a rifle case away from the scene.

This unrest followed a recent police shooting in Minneapolis. A federal officer fatally shot an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer during an incident involving an unlawful immigrant from Venezuela. According to reports, the ICE officer faced an attack from three individuals wielding snow shovels and broomsticks, prompting what law enforcement described as defensive measures.

The aftermath saw disturbances as rioters clashed with both federal law enforcement and local police. Independent journalist Nick Souter shared a video showcasing rioters forcibly entering the ICE vehicle and targeting the weapons locker situated at the back. In it, the man with distinctive tattoos appears to struggle with the rifle bag. Souter has reportedly provided authorities with the man’s image and the getaway car’s license plate.

Another clip highlighted a determined group using ropes and vehicles in an attempt to extract a different weapons locker from the ICE vehicle, their efforts met with varying degrees of success. One man, dressed in a black and white varsity jacket, tried numerous methods to access the locker, even going so far as to shoulder it before ultimately conceding defeat after repeated tries.

Despite clear threats to the safety of law enforcement, it seems police in the area chose not to intervene. Reports have revealed that the Minneapolis Police Department maintains a policy of non-cooperation with ICE and federal agents, even in dangerous situations. A memo issued in June reminded officers of their limitations regarding immigration operations.

According to the memo, “Any support for federal enforcement actions must be channeled through the chain of command for evaluation and approval by the Chief of Police or Chief’s Architect.” This directive affirms that MPD members will not engage in related immigration operations, as community trust and public safety are prioritized.

Perhaps surprisingly, some officials seem to believe that the theft of high-powered weapons and property damage does not jeopardize public safety or erode community trust.

Later that evening, more details emerged about another officer-involved shooting. After facing an attack from multiple individuals armed with dangerous weapons, an officer fired their weapon, striking one attacker in the leg.

Both the shot individual and the officer were taken to a local hospital. Officials expressed concern over a growing trend of hostility toward law enforcement, noting a staggering rise in assaults against federal agents. They criticized local leaders for fostering an environment that encourages resistance against ICE and their officers.

This recent turmoil reflects an increasing divide between federal agents engaged in law enforcement and local officials who hesitate to offer support amid rising violence. The implications of this political divide are unfolding in real-time, raising questions about whether state and city leaders will finally acknowledge the tangible risks their policies create.
