Protest at Jewish Temple Targets Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi
This week, a group of left-wing activists confronted Rep. Tom Suozzi at a Jewish temple in Long Island, expressing their frustration over his recent vote favoring a Republican-led spending bill that boosts funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The activists, part of a group called Climate Defiance, created a scene on Wednesday night while Suozzi was attending an event. Dressed in diapers and knee pads, they mocked so-called “moderate” Democrats who had supported the $64.4 billion funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security.
Although Suozzi later changed his vote on the ICE funding increase, which was about $10 billion, the protests continued. One protester was reported to have said, “Actually, I have some gifts for you. I got some knee pads for you guys to use while I punch Donald Trump.”
Another activist handed Suozzi a diaper, suggesting that he was “the kind of leader who would soil himself if fascists came to our door.”
One protester expressed their feelings as a Jewish person by saying, “As a Jew, I have never felt safer than when there are masked Gestapo on the streets. Thank you Congressman Tom Suozzi for funding ICE.”
Suozzi appeared uneasy during the incidents and withdrew his vote after facing considerable backlash from his fellow party members and following the shooting death of an ICU nurse, Alex Pretti, by Border Patrol agents in Minnesota.
In response to Pretti’s death, Suozzi stated, “I could not treat the DHS funding vote as a referendum on ICE’s illegal and immoral conduct in Minneapolis.” He acknowledged hearing the anger from constituents and said he needs to take more responsibility for his actions.
However, his regret didn’t quell the anger of the Climate Defiance group. The synagogue, which Suozzi had contributed to, criticized him before the incident involving Pretti, who was not the only casualty related to ICE in Minnesota that month.
Protesters jeered, “Tell Lenny Goode he made a mistake and tell Alex Preti he made a mistake.”
Walter Masterson, a left-wing comedian and political activist, was forcibly removed from the temple while attempting to read the names of people who had died due to ICE-related incidents in January. He shouted in frustration, “Nine people have been killed by ICE this month, and you’re going to kick me out while I’m reading their names?!” as he was ejected.
Following the protest, Climate Defiance labeled Suozzi an “ugly, grotesque, fascist-loving coward,” claiming he “has blood on his hands.” Their video of the protest has amassed at least 2 million views.
Though Suozzi did not comment directly about the protest, he mentioned, “That’s how people wanted to express themselves, and unfortunately that’s what’s happening in the world today,” while on stage.
