Protesters Throw Objects at ICE Agents During Arrest Related to Suspected Tren de Aragua in Chicago Area

In Elgin, Illinois, during the arrest of suspected Torren de Aragua gang member Luis Jesús Acosta Gutierrez, a group of agitators confronted ICE agents, leading to confrontations where immigration officials were assaulted. This occurred after Acosta Gutierrez was accused of using his vehicle to ram into an ICE agent’s car.

Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, shared insights about the attacks on ICE officers in the Chicago area via social media. This included a video showing ICE officers trying to leave while protesters yelled and someone waved a Mexican flag.

McLaughlin stated that local police offered no support during the incident. A press release from DHS detailed a previous chase involving Acosta Gutierrez, where he allegedly crashed an ICE vehicle into a tree while attempting to evade arrest.

The statement indicated that ICE officers tried to stop Acosta-Gutierrez on Sunday. He reportedly resisted by ramming his car into the officer’s vehicle while the officer was inside, though the officer remained unharmed.

Following the crash, Acosta-Gutierrez fled on foot and, along with other undocumented individuals, barricaded themselves inside an apartment. While ICE agents approached, a large crowd started throwing objects like stones and bottles at them, as reported by DHS.

DHS noted that Acosta-Gutierrez eventually appeared on the balcony, negotiated with ICE agents, and was convinced to exit the apartment hours later, leading to his arrest.

McLaughlin emphasized that this individual, accused of gang affiliations, had been allowed into the country by the Biden administration and even received Temporary Protected Status, showcasing, as she put it, a troubling lack of scrutiny regarding foreign nationals permitted in the U.S.

She also mentioned that assaults against federal agents enforcing immigration have surged by more than 1,150 percent.
