Protests broke out across the country following the arrest of an individual by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Los Angeles, prompting President Trump to send thousands of National Guard and Marines to the area.
Demonstrators came together in various cities, showing solidarity with protests emerging in Los Angeles.
Here’s a look at the rallies happening nationwide.
Dallas
In Dallas, hundreds of people gathered on Monday evening to voice their opposition to the Trump administration’s aggressive deportation policies. The police labeled the gathering as an illegal assembly and urged protesters to disperse.
Organizers expressed their stance online, saying, “Trump has mobilized the National Guard to suppress immigrant protests in LA. We will not stand idle in the face of the Trump administration’s brutal, racist, and anti-labor policies.” Many echoed, “Dallas won’t stand by while people are punished for opposing ICE’s inhumanity!”
Atlanta
Atlanta saw a peaceful protest outside an ICE building on Monday. Local reports indicated that students and union members were vocal in their support for David Fuerta, a California activist who faced arrest while protesting immigration enforcement.
One protester, David Harris, mentioned, “The government will realize the consequences when it pushes its limits.”
Austin, Texas
Austin protesters turned out in large numbers on Monday to decry the ICE arrests. Assembly took place on the Texas State Capitol’s south steps, and officials later announced the area would be closed to the public.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott noted, “More than a dozen arrests have occurred among protesters related to both the Austin Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety.” He added, “While peaceful protests are permissible, crossing lines can lead to arrests.”
New York City
In Manhattan, dozens gathered near Trump Tower on Monday, calling for the return of individuals detained, including one referred to as Decorty, who was sent to a prison in El Salvador.
During the demonstration, participants claimed, “For years, President Trump has vilified immigrants fleeing persecution to seek a better life.” They further demanded that the administration release those from custody and provide them a chance to present their cases in court.
The group announced plans to continue their protest efforts, targeting Fox News Headquarters the following day.
On Saturday, around 150 protesters were seen outside a federal building in New York City after demonstrations in Los Angeles, resulting in five arrests related to those activities.
