Protests in France about living expenses and school conditions lead to riots

Paris awoke on Sunday to a scene of destruction, with broken shop windows, burnt-out cars, and a substantial police presence following civil unrest that affected the city and other regions in France.

Violent confrontations erupted on Saturday during countrywide protests against rising living costs and deteriorating school conditions. Hundreds of thousands took to the streets, while some masked individuals clashed with law enforcement, looted shops, and ignited fires in various urban areas.

Authorities recorded around 1,800 arrests across the nation, with 855 occurring in the Paris vicinity.

The damage extended beyond just Paris.

In Limoges, situated approximately three hours south of the capital, flames engulfed the historic town hall constructed in 1883, which was recognized as a heritage site in 1975.

The local prefect, Maurice Barate, informed AFP that the building’s roof had caved in, resulting in the loss of about two-thirds of its exterior. He described it as “a catastrophe for heritage.”

French President Emmanuel Macron had urged for “calm and respect” before the protests, emphasizing that the right to demonstrate should be honored in a manner that respects both individuals and property.

However, as the situation deteriorated, Macron and his wife, Brigitte, were seen attending a Celine Dion concert in Nanterre, just west of Paris, according to reports from French media.

The couple reportedly arrived and departed subtly, joining around 35,000 attendees at the Plenitude Arena. Prior to this, Macron had been in Brussels for a European Council meeting on Thursday and Friday.

Former President Donald Trump commented on the chaos on Sunday, attributing the unrest to immigration in a post on Truth Social, and urged France to close its borders.

“The immigration of individuals from an entirely different world, people with hatred in their hearts, has shattered that once great country,” he stated. “Close your borders and take control, before it is too late!”
