Public Broadcasting Corporation closes after loss of federal funding from Trump

Federal Funding Cuts Lead to Closure of Public Broadcasting

Public broadcasting businesses are now facing closure due to cuts from the federal government, as stated by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).

Following backlash from some Republicans regarding federal support for public broadcasting, President Donald Trump took decisive action, effectively ending funding for both CPB and National Public Radio.

“Despite the tireless advocacy from countless Americans who reached out to Congress to preserve federal funding for CPB, we’re now confronting the challenging reality of shutting down our operations,” a statement read.

CPB noted that it would struggle to maintain operations following the recent federal rescue package and the Senate Budget Committee’s 2026 budget proposal for various institutions.

Established by Congress in 1967, CPB’s mission focuses on funding public radio and television across the nation. In its announcement, CPB highlighted its role in supporting “educational content, local journalism, emergency communication, cultural programming, and essential services” in public broadcasting.

Patricia Harrison, CPB’s president and CEO, remarked, “Our commitment remains to provide a variety of services to our partners. We aim to manage our responsibilities diligently while supporting our partners through this transition with transparency and care.”

Critics of public broadcasting funding have pointed out what they perceive as leftist biases in reporting, which they argue justifies reducing taxpayer contributions. Many on the left reacted strongly, expressing concerns that this move signals a shift toward authoritarianism.
