Pubs in England and Wales allowed to stay open later for VE Day anniversary | VE Day

The British Prime Minister will be allowed to remain open until 1am to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

The government will allow pubs in the UK and Wales to close at 1am on May 9th, allowing drinkers to celebrate early.

Four-day events are planned to mark the end of World War II in Europe, including military processes in central London and flypasts, as well as lighting for 2,500 beacons across the UK.

The pub was previously allowed to remain open late when England played in the semi-finals and finals of Euro 2024 and played for Elizabeth II’s Jubilee.

Keir Starmer said: “To celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day, the whole country should come together to remember the incredible sacrifices of the mid-war period and celebrate the peace and freedom they have secured for all of us.

“By leaving our pubs open for a long time, people will be able to participate in celebrations and give the opportunity to raise glasses to all the men and women who served their country both overseas and at home.”

The VE Day commemoration begins on Monday, May 5th with the London Cenotavus flag, military processions from Whitehall to Buckingham Palace, and RAF flypast over London.

On May 8th, the party at the Horse Guard Parade will be aired by the BBC.

Michael Kill, CEO of the Night Time Industries Association, said: “In these rewarding times for the hospitality sector, we will allow businesses to extend their trading hours during these celebrations.
