Pudge the Cat Steals the Show at Bowling Green’s Season Opener
Amidst the buzz of college football on Thursday, one story stood out—not just about athletic performances but about a charming feline mascot in Kansas City.
Pudge the Cat, the beloved locker room cat for the Bowling Green Falcons, captured the internet’s attention as the team marked the start of the season with a decisive 26-7 win against Lafayette. This three-year-old cat even made an appearance on ESPN, heralding the debut of new head coach Eddie George.
After the game, George expressed optimism, saying, “This is just the beginning.” He acknowledged the team’s effort but noted the need for improvement, particularly in their passing game to enhance offensive play. It’s always tricky finding that rhythm in the first game; a solid victory is great, but there’s always room to grow.
George, well-known as a Heisman Trophy winner and former NFL player, took on the role of head coach in March after spending four years at Tennessee. Drafted by the Houston Oilers in 1996, his deep-rooted ties to Ohio State linger, especially as he steps into this new chapter with Bowling Green, along with his unofficial mascot, Pudge.
“Page is cute; my wife adores him,” George mentioned about Pudge. “He’s pretty much part of the family now. Keeps me out of trouble, I suppose.” It’s a light-hearted relationship that seems to keep both parties comfortable.
Pudge’s rise to fame started when Senior Long Snapper George Carlson introduced him to the locker room in early August, hoping to boost the team’s morale. This furry companion quickly melted hearts and brought some much-needed cheer to the players according to reports.
Later that month, Pudge became an internet sensation when a TikTok video capturing his antics in the locker room garnered over 900,000 views, thanks to Senior Wideout Finhogan. “I just want to make people happy,” Carlson shared. “He has brought me joy for a long time, and I wanted to spread that.”
Looking ahead, Bowling Green is set to face Cincinnati next Saturday, a team that, interestingly, suffered a close defeat to Nebraska at Arrowhead Stadium just the night before.
