A severely injured puppy, who has lost most of his nose and has a broken jaw, is making a courageous recovery and capturing hearts along the way.
Named Peanut, this young shepherd-husky mix was brought to Pasadena Humane a few weeks ago after a compassionate stranger discovered him in dire condition in Sierra Madre.
He was missing a large portion of his nose, the soft tissue above his muzzle was entirely gone, and he had a fractured and dislocated jaw.
The circumstances surrounding his injuries remain unclear.
What stands out, however, is Peanut’s resilience. Shelter staff noted that this little survivor was wagging his tail and displaying playful behavior, even while going through one of the most distressing situations they had ever witnessed.
The road to recovery has not been easy.
Due to insufficient skin to close his wound, Peanut’s nose is being reconstructed from the inside out, a careful and gradual process.
A small stent keeps his airway open as new tissue develops, but his situation is still precarious, as he requires constant monitoring.
With one nostril blocked, he has had to adapt by breathing through his mouth, according to the Pasadena Humane team.
The shocking nature of his injuries led to an outpouring of support.
Initially, donations reached the original goal of $2,500 set for his medical care. But as word about Peanut gained traction, contributions soared to $23,000, far exceeding the next target of $7,000.
This funding is crucial for covering his treatment through Pasadena Humane’s Miracle Medical Fund, which assists critically ill animals.
The moment everyone has eagerly awaited has arrived.
“We are so thankful for all the support shown for little Peanut,” the organization announced on social media. “After several weeks of targeted care, we’re pleased to share that Peanut is on the mend and is now available for adoption.”
After all he has been through, his final challenge lies in finding a loving home.
