Putin has presented a peace plan concerning Donetsk, according to Witkoff.

Putin put forward peace proposal involving Donetsk, Witkoff says

Putin’s Peace Proposal Amid Ongoing Conflict in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin has put forth a peace proposal aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine. However, this initiative is deemed unlikely to be accepted by Ukraine, as noted by Steve Witkov, a special envoy for the Ukrainian President.

“There have been peace proposals from the Russians that involve Donetsk. Maybe it’s not something the Ukrainians can agree to,” Witkov said, reflecting on the negotiations. He also mentioned the notable efforts made by certain U.S. officials, including former President Trump, to find a resolution. “We think progress is possible, but the details are crucial,” he added during an appearance on FOX News.

Since his return to office, the president has urged both Ukraine and Russia to pursue a peace agreement. Yet, significant divides remain, particularly regarding security guarantees and territorial issues.

Donetsk and Luhansk, together comprising the Donbas region, have seen considerable military activity. The Russian forces currently control about 75% of Donetsk and have taken nearly all of Luhansk.

Trump conveyed on Monday that he hadn’t gone into specifics about the security guarantees for Ukraine, but emphasized that the U.S. is prepared to support them. “We’ll help from a backup perspective,” he stated.

Recently, the president suggested the possibility of supplying pilots and fighter jets to bolster Ukraine’s defenses. He mentioned that European nations might consider deploying troops on the ground as part of a peacekeeping force. “We’re open to assisting them in aerial matters,” he noted, highlighting the resources at the U.S.’s disposal.

The U.S. administration has indicated its readiness to provide strategic assistance, which may include intelligence support and air defense, in coordination with a potential European-led initiative, as reported by the Financial Times.

After his discussions with Putin and subsequent meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders, Trump proposed a direct dialogue between Ukrainian officials and Putin. However, the Kremlin dismissed this suggestion.

Witkov mentioned during his interview that he had recent talks with Ukrainian representatives in New York and reiterated that communication with Russian officials is ongoing.

“I believe a bilateral meeting could be on the horizon. The president’s involvement will be key in reaching an agreement,” he said.

Trump’s Ukrainian envoy, Keith Kellogg, met with Zelensky in Kyiv recently, with discussions centered on concluding the conflict in Eastern Europe. Topics included security assurances and the return of Ukrainian children allegedly taken by Russia during the war.

“We’re particularly discussing sanctions and the ongoing pressure they may impose on Russia,” Zelensky’s office remarked.

Witkov suggested that Putin expressed a desire for American engagement to help resolve the conflict. “He’s vocal about wanting to end the war; hopefully, he’s sincere in that,” the envoy said.

Vice President Vance indicated over the weekend that further sanctions weren’t off the table but noted these would be evaluated individually.

“We’re trying to apply the right pressure to bring the Russians to negotiate. It seems clear that sanctions alone won’t achieve a ceasefire,” he observed.

In a cabinet meeting, Trump downplayed questions regarding the legitimacy of Zelensky, asserting that “it doesn’t really matter what they say” and described the situation broadly as ineffectual.

When pressed about the likelihood of Putin agreeing to a ceasefire, Trump expressed a desire to see it concluded but stopped short of making any promises. “If I need to push for it, it’s something I’ll consider,” he stated. “But my priority is seeing this resolved.”

On the military front, Russia is making advances, claiming control over two villages in the Dnipropetrovsk region this week. Ukrainian officials confirmed that fighting continues there, with resistance ongoing.

“Yes, the Russians are trying to establish a presence. We are actively working to maintain our positions,” said a spokesperson from the Dnipro Regional Administration.

According to analysts, Russian forces are continuing their campaign in the area utilizing various military strategies, striving to solidify their control and prepare for potential further advances.
