We are waiting for Putin’s proposal for a ceasefire, Rubio says
After a conversation between President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, the U.S. is awaiting a ceasefire proposal from the Russian leader, as stated by Secretary Marco Rubio on Tuesday.
Vladimir Putin made a visit to the West Kursk region on Tuesday, marking his first appearance there since Russian troops expelled Ukrainian forces from the area last month.
During his visit, Putin engaged with local volunteer organizations and toured the Kursk-II nuclear power plant, as reported by the Kremlin.
State television, which aired the visit along with Sergei Kirienko, the Kremlin’s first vice-chief of staff, showed Putin meeting with local officials, including Governor Alexander Kinstein.
Last month, Russia announced it had successfully removed Ukrainian troops from Kursk, which marked their largest assault on Russian territory since World War II.
On August 6, Ukraine launched a significant attack, breaching the Russian border into Kursk with numerous drones and heavy Western weapons. According to Ukrainian military reports, they currently control around 540 square miles of the region.
President Trump is optimistic, believing that Putin is seeking peace with Ukraine and might be feeling, well, that he’s had enough of the ongoing conflict.
Interestingly, this development follows a meeting between Russian and Ukrainian officials in Turkey last week. Despite their efforts, they couldn’t reach an agreement on a ceasefire, marking the first face-to-face discussions since the war began with Moscow’s invasion in February 2022.
