Hamstring injuries to Xavier Coates and Murray Tauragi have forced coach Billy Slater to make some changes to his backline, with veteran Dane Gagai recalled, Selwyn Cobbo promoted from the bench and Valentine Holmes moving to the wing. Kurt Capewell also starts after starting on the bench in Origin II in the absence of Jayden Su’a. But his place in the 17-man is taken not by another forward (not even the still-overlooked David Fifita) but by utility back the mercurial Kalyn Ponga, finally fit for his first Origin game since 2022.
Slater also made some last-minute changes to bring Harry Grant, Moeaki Fotuaika and Felis Kaufusi, all listed as substitutes, onto the run-on side, allowing Ben Hunt to come on as a pinch hitter and with only two big forwards on the bench, Hunt will have to juggle the role.

It’s a bold move that will no doubt excite and thrill Queensland fans. Fullbacks have been named on the lighter Origin bench before, such as Clint Gutherson for the Blues last year, but New South Wales are suffering from a clear size mismatch this year. Besides Ponga, the Maroons also have hooker Harry Grant on the bench, leaving them with just two replacement-only forwards compared to the Blues’ four.

Hello everyone and welcome to our live coverage of the third State of Origin match between Queensland and New South Wales, the series final at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, kicking off at 8:05pm AEST.
An eventful Origin series culminates in another blockbuster Game 3 with everything on the line.
Queensland have home advantage but New South Wales are the momentum, the Maroons are the proven ones but the Blues are the stable ones, Billy Slater made some bold selection choices late on that will define his tenure and Michael Maguire made a statement a few weeks ago but tonight is the big moment for them.
It’s a good start for Maguire – their last win in Melbourne came after his team fought bravely with just 12 men for much of the series opening game – and he has plenty of experience of overcoming slump after ending them with South Sydney, Wigan and New Zealand before taking charge of New South Wales.
After a couple of excellent series at the helm of the Maroons, it was hard to appreciate Billy Slater’s work this time around, and although they won comfortably after an early red card, their first half in Melbourne was the worst ever.
Queensland’s pack was unaccustomedly light and the continued absence of David Fifita inexplicable, so instead of strengthening that area for the deciding match, Slater focused on letting the Bucks take the lead, recalling Kalyn Ponga to the bench at the expense of a replacement forward.
With everything at stake, this is sure to be another great match in Brisbane.
