Quest Diagnostics Confirms Cybersecurity Breach

Quest Diagnostics has acknowledged that a cybersecurity incident has involved patient health information and personal data, leading the healthcare testing provider to momentarily halt access to certain systems.

On Thursday, the New Jersey-based company announced that it disabled access to its Quanum Lab Services Manager (LSM) platform after discovering unauthorized access a day earlier. They anticipate restoring complete functionality by Friday.

This platform is essential for healthcare providers, allowing them to order lab tests and access relevant results.

While Quest believes some patient data might have been accessed, they are still looking into the specifics of what was involved and the scale of the impact.

In addition to the Quanum LSM platform, access to the Essential Insights and LabHQ systems was also temporarily halted as a precaution, though Quest reported no data breaches on those systems.

Despite these temporary access limitations, Quest insists that their main business operations remain stable and that patient service has not been significantly hampered.

Healthcare providers typically using Quanum LSM can still place orders through paper requisitions or the Quanum eLabs platform, while other electronic ordering systems continue to function normally.

Quest has managed to stop the unauthorized access and is focused on restoring the affected systems. They do not anticipate any delays in testing for clients who don’t utilize Quanum LSM.

In their filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Quest revealed that they have informed federal law enforcement and enlisted external cybersecurity experts to assist in their investigation and response.

The company is actively working to identify patients and healthcare providers who may be affected and will issue notifications as required by law.

Quest Diagnostics is one of the prominent providers of diagnostic testing in the U.S., with around $11 billion in revenue reported in 2025.

This incident comes on the heels of a prior cybersecurity breach involving a third-party billing provider that potentially compromised personal details of millions of Quest patients.

In 2019, Quest had reported an incident where American Medical Collection Agency indicated unauthorized access to a system tied to approximately 11.9 million of its patients, clarifying that their own IT systems were not impacted by that breach.

Currently, it’s unclear if this latest breach will lead to any financial repercussions, and Quest has opted not to provide further comments on the situation.
