Quincy Williams faces a challenge from Aaron Glenn after a decline in performance

Quincy Williams Enters a New Chapter

Quincy Williams has already navigated various stages in his NFL journey.

He kicked things off in 2019 when he was selected in the third round by the Jaguars.

After the Jaguars released him, the Jets claimed him in 2021, taking advantage of an exemption.

Since then, he has emerged as a starting linebacker for the Jets and earned All-Pro honors in 2023.

Now, he’s beginning another chapter.

With a fresh coaching staff led by head coach Ahlong Ren and defensive coordinator Steve Wilkes, Williams is looking forward to what’s next.

He spent 90 minutes discussing the future with Glenn upon the coach’s hiring, which has enhanced Williams’ experience.

“The coach first challenged me,” Williams shared recently. “When he first got the job, he called me. We had an hour and a half conversation about his vision, and it aligned with my thoughts on how to engage the players.”

Like many of his defensive teammates, Williams felt last season wasn’t his best. Sure, he recorded 116 tackles and forced four fumbles, but he didn’t feel he had quite the same impact in 2023.

While Glenn kept specifics of his challenges to Williams under wraps, he noted that Williams embraced the apparent difficulties.

“I told Quincy when we first met that there are a few areas I want him to focus on,” Glenn mentioned.

Glenn expressed confidence in Williams, suggesting that the linebacker’s positive response to criticism hinted he was ready to grow.

“It’s all about proving you can take constructive feedback,” Glenn explained. “Even the top players face criticism, but they strive for improvement, and Quincy is definitely one of those individuals.”

Interestingly, Williams is now one of the more veteran players on the Jets, having outlasted numerous other experienced teammates.

He’s set to turn 29 this August and is in the final year of his contract.

Williams has indicated that he aims to step up as a leader on the team.

“Right now, I’m focusing on becoming a team leader and solidifying my role within the foundation of the team,” he noted. “Part of that is understanding the defensive strategy as a whole and figuring out where I fit into that.”

For the past four seasons, Williams benefited from CJ Mosley’s leadership as a fellow linebacker.

With Mosley’s recent release from the Jets, Williams is now tasked with filling that leadership gap.

Seeking guidance, he reached out to Mosley for advice.

“CJ joined my camp this past weekend, so we had some valuable discussions. Plus, since he’s still around in New Jersey, we’ve been grabbing lunch occasionally. I’m trying to understand how he approached leadership, especially since he had a year to learn before really stepping into his role with the Jets,” Williams shared.
