Giants Drop Close Game to Marlins
On Sunday, the San Francisco Giants faced off against the Miami Marlins and found themselves clinging to a one-run lead in the ninth inning when Rafael Devers made it to first base after a walk.
Giants manager Tony Vitello hoped to replace Devers with pinch runner Jonah Cox, believing the change could ramp up the team’s speed and potentially even the score. However, as Cox made his way to first, Devers attempted to persuade him to leave. While Cox ended up taking his base, Devers passionately argued from the sidelines to stay in the game.
After Devers took a brief moment to collect himself, he returned to the dugout. The next batter, Lee Jung-hoo, hit a fly ball, while Willie Adames grounded into a double play, sealing a 2-1 victory for the Marlins.
Vitello acknowledged Devers’ desire to remain in play but also reminded everyone that Devers was dealing with foot soreness. Once he initially opted for Cox, he felt he couldn’t reverse that choice.
“So we’re just going to do our best to win the game,” Vitello stated, adding that he believed this was a manageable situation without needing further discussion with Devers beyond casual day-to-day talks.
The loss brought the Giants’ record to 31-46, while the Marlins improved to 40-38.
Devers, who was acquired by the Giants last season in a significant trade with the Boston Red Sox, may be on the trading block as reports surfaced last week suggesting San Francisco could part ways with him and others before the trade deadline.
Currently, Devers is batting .238 with 11 home runs and an impressive 23 doubles this season.
