Tragic Death of Teenage Murder Suspect in Mississippi Prison
A shocking video has surfaced showing an 18-year-old murder suspect, Mierne Butler, in a state of distress inside a Mississippi prison. The footage depicts him limping and bleeding on the floor, a stark scene that raised concerns about his treatment.
Butler was booked into the Hinds County Jail on July 1 following accusations linked to the shooting death of Melvin Edwards, 32, at the Pine Ridge Garden Apartments in Jackson last month.
Just two days later, a troubling video began circulating online, showcasing someone kicking Butler’s barely responsive body as he lay on the ground in Raymond Prison.
An autopsy later revealed that he died due to blunt force trauma to the head, confirming suspicions that he was trampled to death. Hinds County Coroner Jeremiah Howard mentioned that there were noticeable shoe prints on his head.
Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones acknowledged the authenticity of the gruesome video. He indicated that the unidentified officer who was supposed to be on patrol during the incident has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.
Moreover, control of the prison was reassigned to Wendell France, a court-appointed federal administrator, after Jones faced scrutiny over jail conditions. A federal court hearing is planned for Friday to address these ongoing concerns.
Butler’s death occurred coincidentally on the same day a judge ordered the sheriff’s office to release jail death records that had previously been withheld from the Southern Poverty Law Center.
Authorities suspect there may be gang ties to the violence, with Sheriff Jones commenting on the overlap between community tensions and rising prison violence. “I think it’s clear that some of the issues we see outside filter into the prison system,” he stated.
This incident marks a troubling chapter as Butler was the second individual charged in connection with Edwards’ murder.
At his first court appearance on July 2, Butler was assigned a bail of $1 million, underscoring the serious nature of the accusations against him.
