Raheem Morris supports quarterback Michael Penix Jr after backlash from a viral clip

Reaction to Michael Penix Jr.’s Comments

Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris has responded to the online discourse surrounding quarterback Michael Penix Jr.’s remarks from a viral video. Morris expressed that he believes Penix’s comments have been taken out of context, labeling the situation as somewhat of a “joke.” He mentioned feeling let down by the criticism directed at individuals online.

“I feel sorry for the kids,” Morris noted. “I just hope they don’t get pulled into things that aren’t really significant.”

During a media session on Wednesday, Penix was asked about whom he looks to for mental and physical support. He highlighted his fiancé and a former coach as his main sources of encouragement.

Penix said, “Mentally, my fiancé is always there for me. No matter how I perform, she greets me with a smile and a hug, making me feel good.” He also mentioned that while he lacks a direct mentorship from other quarterbacks, he does have a coach at home who provides guidance.

Morris pointed out that both himself and offensive coordinator Zach Robinson, as well as backup quarterback Kirk Cousins, were notably absent from Penix’s list of support figures. This comes amid criticism of Robinson, who has recently faced scrutiny for his play-calling during the Falcons’ uneven performance this season.

After a disappointing 30-0 loss to the Carolina Panthers in Week 3, Robinson descended from the coaches’ booth to the sideline. Morris indicated that this change was part of addressing communication issues between the quarterback and the play-caller.

Morris indicated that it might be time to shift the focus from Penix’s remarks to more pressing matters on the field, such as the team’s struggles with third-down conversions this season. “Let’s address the real issues, like finding a solution for third down. Don’t create problems that aren’t there,” he stated.

On Friday, reporters approached Penix for clarification on his Wednesday statements, but he opted not to elaborate further.

Morris also revealed that he and Penix had lightheartedly joked about the situation during practice. He mentioned that various assistant coaches, including Cousins, could play a supportive role for Penix moving forward.

DJ Williams, the Falcons’ quarterbacks coach and son of NFL legend Doug Williams, commented that he had disregarded the surrounding controversy. “Honestly, I don’t care,” he remarked, adding that everything else seemed like background noise.

Penix took over for Cousins late last season, starting the last three games of his rookie run. His first full season as a starter has been characterized by ups and downs; so far, he has tallied 1,807 yards, nine touchdowns, and three interceptions over eight games, though he missed one contest due to a leg injury.

The Falcons are currently on a four-game losing streak, and they will host the Panthers this Sunday for an NFC South matchup.
