Raiders announce surprising roster change just after the start of NFL training camps

Christian Wilkins’ Tenure with the Raiders Comes to an End

Christian Wilkins has been recognized as one of the top interior defensive linemen in the NFL—when he’s healthy, that is.

Last offseason, he signed a substantial four-year contract with the Las Vegas Raiders, but his 2024 season was cut short after just five games due to a foot injury.

As of Thursday, Wilkins is no longer a Raider.

The team released a statement saying, “We believe that moving forward from Christian Wilkins is in the organization’s greatest interest, and he is informed of his release from the team.”

Wilkins was released under the designation of a veteran who has completed their time with the team. It’s unclear if he will receive any significant payout from his contract.

The deal he signed in 2024 included around $84.75 million guaranteed, with about $35.2 million still owed to him. However, the Raiders decided to void his contract.

In response to his release, Wilkins has filed a grievance with the NFL Players Association, as reported by ESPN. There seems to be concern regarding the treatment he received during his rehabilitation process and the way it influenced the situation.

The Raiders mentioned a lack of a clear plan for Wilkins’ return, suggesting that the decision to release him was made to facilitate progress for the entire organization as they prepare for the upcoming season.

Wilkins, the 22½ sack player, was a first-round draft pick out of Clemson and previously spent five seasons with the Miami Dolphins.
