Raiders set to part ways with Christian Wilkins and his $110 million one-year deal

Raiders Part Ways with Defensive Tackle Christian Wilkins

In a surprising turn of events, the Raiders have decided to release standout defensive tackle Christian Wilkins, after just one year of a hefty five-year, $110 million contract that was signed in 2024.

This release comes alongside the designation of a vested veteran, which led to the team voiding the remaining $35.2 million in guaranteed money on his contract, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Wilkins recently filed a complaint with the NFL Players Association, which further complicates the situation.

The decision seems to stem from concerns regarding how Wilkins managed his rehabilitation for leg injuries, which significantly limited his availability last season—he only played in five games.

There had been ongoing disagreements between the Raiders and Wilkins over whether he should undergo surgery on his feet, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. While Las Vegas urged him to get multiple opinions, Wilkins reportedly declined to do so.

Throughout his six-year career, Wilkins made a mark as a Pro Bowl player, appearing in 86 games with 82 starts. His stats include 372 tackles, 22.5 sacks, and four forced fumbles. Unfortunately, a foot injury restricted him from delivering the expected impact for the Raiders.

This injury occurred during a game against the Broncos in Week 5. Last season, he recorded 11 solo tackles and two sacks.

Despite being placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list last Friday, there is still uncertainty regarding his return. “It’s still uncertain,” Raiders head coach Pete Carroll mentioned in a recent press conference, suggesting that the team needs more time to assess the situation.

Interestingly, Wilkins has been seen wearing walking boots recently. He was initially expected to play a significant role in the Raiders’ defensive strategy, particularly alongside Max Crosby, as the team gears up for the 2025 season.
