Rep. Ralph Norman Joins South Carolina’s 2026 Governor Race

Rep. Ralph Norman, recognized as one of the more conservative Republicans in the U.S. House, is entering the 2026 gubernatorial race in South Carolina.

The affluent real estate developer, who has a longstanding connection with former governor Nikki Haley, is anticipated to file the necessary candidacy documents this Friday, according to his campaign team. An official kickoff event is scheduled for Sunday in Rock Hill, within Norman’s district.

Although Norman, age 72, has been contemplating his run for some time, he appears less inclined to seek backing from a critical figure in South Carolina GOP politics—President Donald Trump. This sets him apart from several of his fellow candidates.

Joining the race alongside Norman will be Attorney General Alan Wilson and Lt. Col. Pamela Evett during the GOP primary scheduled for next June. Notably, Rep. Nancy Mace from South Carolina’s 1st District is expected to announce her campaign soon, and all three candidates are showcasing their ties to Trump, who remains popular in the state following his decisive victory in 2016.

Norman has openly supported Trump throughout the former president’s initial term. He was vocal in urging Trump to declare “Martial Law” during the events of January 6, 2021, as the Capitol was stormed by Trump supporters.

Interestingly, during the 2024 presidential primaries, Norman was one of the few congressional members nationwide endorsing Haley’s campaign. Their relationship dates back to their legislative days in 2004, where they allied on numerous occasions, particularly during Haley’s gubernatorial efforts in 2010. Norman suggested that Haley could serve two full terms—something he didn’t see for Trump, oddly enough.

Jim Demint, a former Republican senator from South Carolina, pointed out that Norman’s backing of Haley may be a potential drawback, but he still considers him a suitable candidate for leadership in South Carolina. Demint expressed that while Norman isn’t easily intimidated by Trump, his loyalty could have repercussions in light of his support for Haley.

Norman seems to have a unique approach, often operating outside traditional party lines. Back in 2018, he supported Katherine Templeton for governor against Henry McMaster, who had Trump’s endorsement. This was amidst a challenging period for McMaster as he navigated political hurdles during his first full term.

With a strong affiliation to the House Freedom Caucus, composed of some of the most conservative lawmakers, Norman’s legislative actions have earned him a reputation as South Carolina’s most conservative congressman, according to Govtrack.us. He’s been serving since the special election in 2017, succeeding Mick Mulvaney after his appointment by Trump to the Office of Management and Budget.

Norman’s history is not without controversy. In 2018, during a town hall meeting, he controversially displayed a loaded firearm to underscore his stance on gun safety, which led South Carolina Democrats to push for felony charges—though these were never filed. Additionally, during the pandemic, he faced a fine for not wearing a mask on the House floor, an action he later contested in court.
