Ralph Norman enters the race for South Carolina governor in 2026

Rep. Ralph Norman Enters Governor Race

On Friday, Rep. Ralph Norman from South Carolina confirmed his candidacy for governor in the upcoming 2026 election. This race will be fiercely competitive for Norman, particularly as he navigates his history of backing President Trump.

Norman, who has been a longstanding member of the House Freedom Caucus, is recognized as one of the more conservative lawmakers in Congress. He has represented District 5 since a special election victory in 2017.

According to a spokesperson for his campaign, “Ralph Norman believes Columbia needs substantial reform to prepare South Carolina for the future by upgrading roads and improving schools.” He is, as mentioned in various circles, “the worst nightmare of a political group.”

Norman is part of key fiscal conservative committees, including those on Budget, Financial Services, and Rules, along with several subcommittees.

Interestingly, while Trump’s influence is notable in South Carolina politics, Norman isn’t expected to rely on the ex-president’s support this time around. He previously backed Nikki Haley and has made appearances on the campaign trail for the 2024 elections.

His career, however, has not been without its controversies. He once dismissed the January 6th committee as “a politically motivated exercise with predetermined results” and notably displayed a loaded gun during a meeting, proclaiming, “Guns don’t shoot people; people shoot guns.” Additionally, in May 2021, he was fined for refusing to wear a mask in Congress.

The race for governor is shaping up to be quite crowded. Notable contenders include Lt. Col. Pamela Ebbett, Attorney General Alan Wilson, and state Senator Josh Kimbrell. While Rep. Nancy Mace has expressed interest in joining the race, she has yet to make a formal announcement.

On the Democratic side, Jermaine Johnson is reportedly forming an exploratory committee to assess his chances for 2026. As for the Republican Governors Association, they have not yet commented on Norman’s announcement.
