Rams’ Day 3 NFL draft surprises feature edge rusher, safety, and cornerback

Rams' Day 3 NFL draft surprises feature edge rusher, safety, and cornerback

The Rams are gearing up for the NFL Draft, holding seven picks in total. This includes the 13th overall selection, a result of a strategic trade with the Falcons last year.

Interestingly, they don’t have any fourth or fifth-round picks. After their third-round choice at No. 93, their next pick isn’t until the sixth round at No. 207.

That said, it wouldn’t be too surprising if they traded one or two of their three seventh-round picks to move up on Day 3, aiming to grab a player they really like before someone else does.

One name to keep in mind is Jadon Canady, a cornerback from Oregon State. He could be a valuable addition, especially with the Rams reshuffling their cornerback situation. They’ve made key trades and free-agent acquisitions, which have transformed a previous weakness into a strong point.

Still, the cornerback room isn’t completely settled—especially at the slot position where safety Quentin Lake frequently plays. Canady has shown promise as a slot corner and possesses good coverage skills, toughness, and an instinct for the ball.

Drew Shelton, Tackle, Penn State

Tackle might not be the most obvious need, but it’s quietly important for the Rams. While Alaric Jackson and Warren McClendon Jr. are potential starters in 2026, only Jackson is under contract beyond that year. David Quessenberry and AJ Arcuri are also options as they head into the draft.

So, they might look to bolster their tackle position, whether for depth or future planning. Shelton, who started 34 games at Penn State, stands at 6-foot-5 and weighs 314 pounds. He could use some refinement, but the Rams have time to develop him as a rookie.

Kaden Wetchen, Wide Receiver, Iowa State

The Rams had significant issues with special teams last season, especially when injuries struck. One incident even impacted their chances in the NFC Championship Game.

Given the overall strength of their roster, allocating a draft pick for a player focused on special teams seems reasonable. Wetchen, noted for averaging 26.8 yards per punt return last season, brings unique talents as a returner and poses a threat to break long runs every time he receives the ball. His potential impact as a returner makes him a versatile option, even if he only had 20 catches for 151 yards last season.

Mason Reiger, Edge, Wisconsin

The Rams continually seek pass-rushing talent, and Reiger is an intriguing prospect with a knack for causing disruption on the field.

He recorded impressive stats last season, including an 82.4 grade from Pro Football Focus, with 45 total pressures, six sacks, and 32 tackles. His ability to excel in run defense suggests he could evolve into a three-down defensive end. While he might need to bulk up a bit, he offers strong value as a late-round pick with considerable upside.

Bishop Fitzgerald, Safety, USC

The Rams have a solid trio of safeties, but there’s always room for more talent as they look ahead.

Last season, Fitzgerald made 51 total tackles for USC, along with 2.5 behind the line of scrimmage, one sack, eight pass breakups, and five interceptions. He previously spent two years at North Carolina State, gathering additional interceptions and tackles, showcasing his versatility.

Fitzgerald’s ability to play various roles makes him an attractive option for the Rams, whether near the line of scrimmage or deeper in coverage.
