Rams Suffer Overtime Loss to 49ers, McVay Reflects on Decision
After the Rams fell 26-23 to the 49ers on Thursday night, head coach Sean McVay didn’t offer any remarks at the post-game press conference. It was clear to him that the last play call wasn’t great.
And it definitely felt like a bad call.
During the NFC West showdown, the two teams battled fiercely in an exciting overtime. Following a field goal from the 49ers, they took a three-point lead. The Rams had a chance to tie or win the game, positioning themselves well on the 20-yard line after a 38-yard pass from Matthew Stafford.
But the following plays only netted the Rams nine yards, leading to a crucial fourth-and-one situation. After both teams called timeouts, Los Angeles opted to go for it but seemed to forget the score was tied.
What followed was a disappointing attempt.
Stafford rolled out to his right after handing off to Kylen Williams, who was gunning for a potential touchdown in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for the Rams, Williams was quickly engulfed by the San Francisco defense, failing to make significant progress.
In the aftermath, McVay expressed that he felt “sick” about the decision. While he hadn’t initially considered kicking a field goal, in retrospect, perhaps that would have been the better option.
“That was a poor decision,” McVay noted. “I’m really disappointed in how I put our team in a tough spot to finish the game. These are the hard lessons to learn, and now we need to regroup and move on.”
Stafford had an impressive night with 389 yards and three touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough as the Rams dropped to a 3-2 record. Meanwhile, San Francisco improved to 4-1, continuing their strong performance this season.
