Rand Paul Accuses Fauci of Concealing Coronavirus ‘Conspiracy’
Senator Rand Paul, a Republican from Kentucky, has made accusations regarding Dr. Anthony Fauci’s alleged involvement in funding gain-of-function research that preceded the global pandemic. Paul claims that Fauci pressured intelligence personnel—specifically those from the CIA—to alter their original reports concerning the pandemic’s origins. He has criticized what he describes as “misdirection, conspiracies,” and “cover-ups” that have distorted public understanding of the virus.
Recently, Paul released new documents associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. According to these records, U.S. authorities had already intercepted biological materials related to a U.S.-China coronavirus research network in 2018. It seems this was done to sidestep international conflict and regulatory scrutiny.
The documents highlight intelligence from the Department of Homeland Security, revealing a network linked to virologist Fang Li from the University of Minnesota.
In the lead-up to the pandemic, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reportedly intercepted undeclared biological materials associated with researchers in both the U.S. and China, particularly involving Lee, who receives funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Paul emphasized this in a recent announcement.
In April 2018, Zhengli Shi of the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) reached out to Li for assistance in transporting antibodies used for SARS research from the U.S. to China. However, Li cautioned Shi that given the “current tensions between the United States and China,” it was not advisable to proceed. He recommended that another scientist handle the shipment instead.
In October that same year, a student from Fang Li’s lab, Qibing Geng, offered to send a live porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) along with a propagation protocol to prominent researcher Ralph Barrick. Geng requested Barrick’s address for the shipment while not disclosing his military ties to the People’s Liberation Army on his visa application.
Later, in November 2018, CBP officers intercepted three undeclared vials hidden in paper towels and wax film at the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport. The courier identified as Zhou Yuxian was linked to the Chinese Academy of Military Medicine.
In June 2021, the same courier was apprehended again at Detroit’s airport carrying 132 vials and a laptop belonging to another person, reportedly issued by a U.S. research institute. The vials might have contained a type of fly commonly used in biological studies.
As Chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, Paul has publicly released various internal documents through his archive, dubbed the Reading Room. These previous disclosures have drawn attention to the authors of a significant paper who expressed private doubts about the origin of the virus and details about the FBI canceling a planned inquiry into another virus researcher.
