Rangers’ Igor Shesterkin pulled after five-goal start vs. Kings

Things didn't look too good for the Rangers in the first period.

In the second it was even worse.

And that meant Igor Shesterkin's Saturday afternoon online activities at the Garden were cut short.

After allowing two goals to the Kings in the first inning, Shesterkin allowed three more goals in the first five-plus minutes of the middle half, enough for head coach Peter Laviolette to strip Jonathan Quick of the starting job.

Shesterkin was placed on the bench more than a week after agreeing to an eight-year, $92 million contract with the Rangers.

The last goal was 24 seconds apart, with Adrian Kempe and Phillip Danault scoring the second at 4:40 and 5:04.

Shesterkin made 16 saves (76.2 percent) on 21 total shots before Matinee ended early in the second period.

This is the second time in just over a month that Shesterkin has been pulled after giving up five points early on, the first being against the Sabers on Nov. 7.
