Rangers’ Peter Laviolette makes big changes to power play

Peter LaViolet appears to be trying to inspire a power play for the horrifying Ranger.

He fine-tuned two power play units during practice on Friday, increasing Alexis Lafrenière to the first power play unit and demoting Mika Zibanejad to the second power play line.

The first unit consisted of Vincent Trokek, Artemi Panarin, Rafreniere, Chris Kreider and Adam Fox, while the second unit featured JT Miller, Johnny Brozinski, Zibanejad, Will Quille and Zach Jones.

Although La Violet did not commit to change, it appears he will likely use it against the Canucks on Saturday.

“If something isn't working, if you don't get results, then at some point you have to see something different,” Rabiolet said. “I think sometimes you need to put up something and hold back to see how it goes. You might have to put up something for one game, you can't get results and you won't change the next one. You don't know what it does.

“But if you have a long time and you don't get results, you have to look at something different.”

During the recent skid of a team that dropped out of the playoff spot at 2-5-2, the Rangers have one power play goal on 22 occasions.

“Living just a little bit in a group,” Miller said. “Everyone is excited to see some new faces, and sometimes it works, so we will see.

“We need to score, we don't have to score, we need momentum for our teams. The goals are great. Obviously you want to be a manufacturer of different things. But now we're stagnating too much and stopping the game from creating momentum for our teams.

Matt Lempe practiced on Friday after missing out on Thursday's defeat to the Maple Leafs due to illness.

Igor Shesterkin harbored pain for a few seconds after saving a shot from Brodzinski from his stomach during practice on Friday, then denounced the stick on the board with frustration.

Anton Brid was sent back to Hartford on Friday. He had been recalled on Thursday due to Lempe's absence.
