Rangers Struggle Again at Home
The Rangers have become a point of disappointment on Broadway, facing boos as they left Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night.
After a promising start to the season, the team dropped their first six home games, including a 3-0 defeat to Carolina, leading to an ongoing losing streak.
The last time they celebrated a win at the Garden was April 17, marking the end of last season, yet they suffered four shutout losses in six home games since then.
Despite their rocky home performance, they entered Tuesday’s game with three consecutive wins. It seemed they had turned a corner, at least for a moment.
However, the issues persisted against the Hurricanes. Scoring remains a challenge, as they often fail to capitalize on opportunities.
The power play has been particularly problematic. Heading into the game, they were 0-for-9 over the last four matches with the man advantage, and they added to that tally by missing three more opportunities on Tuesday.
Before the puck dropped, head coach Mike Sullivan expressed the need for the team to “simplify” their approach.
Indeed, they managed to outscore the Hurricanes 13-4 in the first half of the game.
But, they couldn’t break through against goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov in his season debut after recovering from a lower-body injury. The crowd was less than forgiving, booing him after a costly turnover in the third period.
The momentum shifted when Vladislav Gavrikov received a slashing penalty at 13:01 in the first period.
Just half a minute later, Carolina’s Nikolai Ehlers netted the opening goal against Igor Shesterkin.
Sean Walker added a second goal for the Hurricanes at 17:07 in the second period. By this point, the Rangers were already receiving boos from their fans, having failed to score in three previous home games and now facing another unfavorable situation.
Despite some promising plays, like Artemi Panarin being denied from a close range early on, the second line also struggled to convert, with Alexis Lafreniere unable to find the net on a one-timer.
JT Miller also had his share of missed chances.
Entering the third period down by two goals, the Rangers seemed to tire as they managed only one shot from Sam Carrick, which wasn’t enough to rattle Kochetkov.
Seth Jarvis then capped off the scoring with an empty-net goal.
Looking ahead, the Blueshirts will face the Red Wings in Detroit on Friday. Unlike the Rangers, the Red Wings are performing well at home. After that, the Rangers will return to the Garden to host the Islanders and Predators.
