Rangers Struggle Against Blackhawks in 3-0 Loss
CHICAGO — The Rangers’ performance leaves much to be desired, even against a rebuilding Blackhawks team.
In a disappointing 3-0 defeat, the Blueshirts fell for the third time in a row, marking their sixth shutout loss this season and the first time being blanked on the road.
When the Rangers’ offense cools, it doesn’t just slow down—it seems to vanish entirely. They struggle to connect passes, and as the game progresses, not only does their time in the offensive zone diminish, but the quality of their opportunities drops significantly.
Watching Connor Bedard, the top pick from the 2023 draft, excel with a two-point game only adds to the frustration. In contrast, the Rangers’ 2020 first-round pick, Alexis Lafreniere, has managed just three goals in his last 14 games, with several lackluster performances.
When the team’s star players can’t find the net, it often translates to a broader struggle across the roster. Missing key offensive contributors like Artemi Panarin, JT Miller, and Mika Zibanejad certainly compounds the issue.
Interestingly, this was one of the Blackhawks’ stronger games of the season, especially considering they’d lost eight of their previous ten contests.
Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin had to be on his game from the start, saving 10 shots in the first period and finishing with 22 stops overall, though he allowed two goals early on.
A long rebound put Andre Burakovsky in a prime scoring position, but Shesterkin managed to deflect the shot with his blocker. Shortly after, he executed a crucial slide to block Bedard’s attempt.
Despite outscoring the Blackhawks in the second period, the Rangers were still left chasing the game.
Forming a five-forward power play unit after losing Adam Fox to injury has not paid off; they struggled to gain control and allowed Louis Crevier to score a short-handed goal, putting Chicago ahead 1-0.
Coach Mike Sullivan tried to turn things around by placing Scott Morrow on the top power play, but the outcome didn’t change.
Over their last five games, the Blueshirts have gone 0-for-11 on the power play, including nothing during this game.
Not long after, Ryan Donato scored for Chicago, but a successful Rangers challenge revealed a hand pass by Colton Dach that nullified the goal.
Ultimately, Bedard capitalized on a pass from Burakovsky and fired the puck past Shesterkin into the top corner, extending the Blackhawks’ lead to 2-0.
