Rangers Struggling Despite Positive Moments
This season, the Rangers have unfortunately set the record for the worst home performance in the NHL. Sadly, they’re still caught in a concerning pattern of losses.
In their latest five-game stretch, they fell 3-2 to the Golden Knights at Madison Square Garden. The game was particularly frustrating, ending on a last-minute goal by Jack Eichel, who scored just eight seconds into overtime. The Rangers seemed to be playing from behind the whole time, allowing a tying goal late in the third period.
Mika Zibanejad and Alexis Lafreniere tried to turn things around, taking 17 shots during the second period, and they did manage to score two goals about four minutes apart. However, they missed a power play opportunity, which has left them with a disappointing home record of 3-9-2 and an overall mark of 15-13-3 as they prepare for a game against Chicago.
Jonathan Quick, who was starting for the first time since November 22 due to a lower-body injury, made 26 saves. The Golden Knights initially took the lead at 2-1, but they were met with some resistance. Tomas Hertl managed to tie things up with a rebound with just over 51 seconds on the clock.
Vegas jumped ahead just 36 seconds into the game, taking advantage of a turnover by Vladislav Gavrikov. Former Rangers center Brett Howden capitalized on that miscue, quickly putting the Knights up 1-0.
Howden almost netted another goal a few minutes later, but Quick was quick to stop it, making a spectacular save. Despite that, the Rangers only managed one shot on goal in the first 14 minutes. Sam Carrick did attempt to galvanize the crowd with a fight against Keegan Kolesar, trying to ignite some energy for the home team.
Quick had his work cut out for him, having to block several attempts from the Golden Knights, who were dominating the shots on goal early on.
Vincent Trocheck didn’t help much, finally getting the second shot on goal for the Rangers less than six minutes before the end of the second period. The Rangers seemed to be inching closer to breaking through, with Zibanejad tying the game with a notable shot that was redirected off Lafreniere and hit a post. This marked Zibanejad’s fourth goal in six games, extending his scoring streak to seven.
Following Zibanejad’s goal, the Rangers had some momentum, with Hart, the Golden Knights’ goalie, denying another close chance from Connor Sheary. Lafreniere then took advantage of another setup from Zibanejad, scoring to put the Rangers ahead 2-1 just before the end of the second period.
As the period wrapped, Artemi Panarin was penalized at an inopportune moment, giving the Golden Knights a power play opportunity, but Quick and the Rangers managed to hold onto their lead as they entered the third period.
