Raskin: GOP being reduced to a ‘cult of authoritarian personality’

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) said Wednesday that the Republican Party has “degenerated into an authoritarian cult of personality” after former President Trump nearly won the Super Tuesday primary states. Ta.

“[I]It is shameful that a great political party, especially the party of Abraham Lincoln, the party of freedom and unity, should be reduced to an authoritarian cult of personality in collusion with dictators, thieves and despots around the world. said Ruskin. said in an interview on MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Report.”

Raskin’s comments came as Trump’s last Republican primary rival, Nikki Haley, withdrew from the race on Wednesday. But she doesn’t support Trump and needs to win the support of her supporters, she said.

“I applaud Liz Cheney, Adam Kinzinger, the Lincoln Project, and all the Republicans who stood up for the Constitution, but what we’ve seen in this election and what Nikki Haley has done. We have to see what happens. The Republican Party can’t bend, even if it bends,” Raskin continued.

“In other words, there is no ability to accept other opinions because everyone has to obey Donald Trump like a monarch.”

Haley, Trump’s former ambassador to the United Nations, stepped up her attacks on Trump as the campaign progressed, with Trump often bashing her with nicknames such as “birdbrain.” President Trump also said at one point that Haley’s donors were being barred from her MAGA movement.

“The best part of politics is bringing people to your cause, not pushing them away,” Haley said Wednesday in a speech in Charleston, South Carolina. Now it’s his time to choose. ”

Raskin was an architect of Trump’s second impeachment for his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, and served on the House Jan. 6 Committee along with Kinzinger and Cheney. He is currently the ranking member of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee and has become President Biden’s chief defender as Republicans investigate Hunter Biden’s business dealings.
