Nearly 1,000 people have been convicted of crimes related to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, including more than 400 for assaulting police officers.
In an interview Sunday on NBC's “Meet the Press,” Stefanik said the incarceration of those convicted of the Jan. 6 crimes amounted to “the weaponization of the federal government.”
“We have concerns about the treatment of the hostages on January 6,” she said. “We have rules in Congress to oversee the treatment of prisoners of war. And I believe we're going to see a weaponization of the federal government, not just against President Trump, but against conservatives as well.”
Following the 2021 Capitol riot, Stefanik strongly condemned the attack, saying “violence in any form is absolutely unacceptable” and calling on the Justice Department to hold those responsible “to the fullest extent of the law.” He called for prosecution.
Saturday marked the third anniversary of the riot, with Democrats calling for the threat of political violence to be taken more seriously heading into the 2024 election cycle. Stefanik was one of many Republicans who tried to downplay the violence.

“People convicted of assaulting police officers or conspiring to overthrow the government are not 'hostages'.” he said this in x. “Ms. Stefanik must apologize to the families of the 130 people currently held hostage by Hamas. Her pandering to Trump is dangerous.”
As Trump maintains a commanding lead in the Republican primary, speculation is mounting about who his running mate will be. Stefanik is the front-runner, but on Sunday refused to rule out a run for vice president.
“Well, of course I would be honored to serve in any capacity in the Trump administration,” she said on NBC on Sunday. “I'm proud to be the first Congressman to support his re-election. I'm proud to be a strong supporter of President Trump and he will win this November. .”
Republican primary rivals Nikki Haley, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, and even Sen. Tim Scott (RS.C.), who withdrew from the presidential race in November, are also considered likely candidates.
