Buffalo Sabres’ Rasmus Darling Shares Personal Health Struggle
Buffalo Sabres star Rasmus Darling recently opened up to hockey fans about a deeply personal experience. In a heartfelt letter, he shared that his fiancé, Carolina Matobach, had to undergo a heart transplant after suffering “major heart failure” during their vacation in France this past summer.
Darling described the alarming situation in a letter released by the team. It seems Matobach had been feeling unwell for several days, which ultimately led to her critical condition. “Major Heart Failure,” he emphasized, underlining the severity of the incident.
Fortunately, she received CPR multiple times, even for extended periods. “Without that life-saving intervention, the outcome could have been unimaginable,” Darling reflected, admitting it’s challenging to even confront such worst-case scenarios.
After enduring several weeks of uncertainty, Matobach finally received her transplant in France. “We owe so much to the commitment, skill, and compassion of the medical team who cared for Carolina,” Darling noted, expressing gratitude.
He also extended his thanks to the NHL, the NHLPA, and the Pegra family for their ongoing support. In sharing this life-changing experience, he aims to remind everyone of the importance of cherishing our loved ones and fully embracing each day.
As Matobach continues her rehabilitation journey, Darling highlighted her tremendous spirit and resilience. “I feel so lucky to have her by my side,” he said, reflecting on her determination to return to Buffalo with him.
Darling, now 25, is gearing up for his eighth NHL season after being drafted by the Sabres in 2018. He’s made quite a name for himself, consistently delivering impressive performances, including aiming to represent Sweden in the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy.
