Raul Valle acquitted in the deadly stabbing of a prep school lacrosse player in 2022

Case Update on Stabbing Incident

Raul Valle, the individual implicated in the fatal stabbing of James “Jimmy” McGrath, has been acquitted of murder and intentional manslaughter charges. This verdict comes after a jury deliberation in connection with a 2022 incident involving a high school party.

Valle, a resident of Connecticut, faced allegations of causing stab wounds to McGrath, a 16-year-old student from Fairfield Preparatory School. The young McGrath tragically lost his life following a drunken altercation that unfolded at a party.

On July 9, 2025, Judge Shari Murphy announced the not-guilty verdict concerning first- and second-degree charges. Valle’s case had been contentious, with evidence and testimonies being carefully examined.

Now 20 years old, Valle was involved in the chaotic brawl that led to McGrath’s death in May 2022. Following a night of underage drinking and fighting, they found McGrath injured, having suffered a stab wound to the left side of his chest, which proved fatal.

According to reports, the police were alerted to the situation just before midnight at a residence on Laurel Glen Drive in Shelton. Witnesses indicated that around 25 people participated in the altercation, complicating the situation. Valle was said to have been armed with a knife during the incident.

In his defense, Valle maintained that he acted in self-defense. He testified that during the fracas, a friend handed him the knife and at one point, he lost consciousness, leading to his erratic swinging of the weapon.

At the time of his arrest in May 2022, Valle was released on a $2 million bond. Had he faced conviction on multiple counts, he could have received a substantial prison sentence. Valle opted to reject a plea bargain and continued to contest the allegations against him.

The prosecution has signaled intentions to review the case following the jury’s inability to reach a unanimous decision on the charges. Meanwhile, McGrath’s family expressed their continued pursuit of justice, stating they aim to hold accountable those responsible for the events that night.

They emphasized, “We are pursuing justice to have those responsible for the chain of events that night take responsibility.” There seems to be a shared sentiment among them that although this chapter may have closed, their quest for accountability is far from over.
