The Ravens seem to have miscalculated Lamar Jackson’s practice status on Friday.
Initially, Baltimore indicated that Jackson was a full participant due to a right hamstring issue. However, after further consultation with the league on Saturday, the team updated his status to restricted.
As a result, he has been officially ruled out for Sunday’s matchup against the Bears.
“Lamar Jackson was present for the entire practice on Friday before the game against the Bears and was listed as a full participant,” the Ravens stated on Saturday. “But after reevaluation and discussions with league officials today, we’ve corrected his status to reflect that he did not participate fully in practice.”
It’s important to note that Jackson, 28, was only participating in practice squad reps rather than as a starter, which made the initial listing as a full participant incorrect according to NFL protocols.
The NFL outlines that if a player takes part in individual practices but not in team drills due to medical conditions, they should be marked as having “limited participation.” Being on the scout team doesn’t automatically alter that designation.
The NFL has since announced it will investigate the situation, as reported by ESPN.
“The league will review this matter,” said NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy. “They’ll look into all factors surrounding changes in player status.”
Jackson is anticipated to return when the Ravens face the Dolphins on Thursday, according to NFL Network.
Before his injury at the end of September, Jackson was on track for a remarkable 2024 season, amassing 869 passing yards and 10 touchdowns over four games.
The Ravens have had a tough time without him, managing just 13 points in their last two losses to the Texans and Rams.
In Jackson’s absence, Tyler Huntley is expected to take the helm as the starting quarterback, stepping in for Cooper Rush, who has struggled with four interceptions over two games.
