Ravens Fall to Steelers in Dramatic Finish
The Baltimore Ravens were hopeful when they believed Lamar Jackson had connected with Isiah Likely for a game-winning touchdown against the Pittsburgh Steelers with just under three minutes remaining. Likely jumped to make the catch, trying to position the ball out of reach from Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. Unfortunately, it seems that effort was insufficient, as Porter managed to disrupt the catch.
Initially, NFL officials signaled a touchdown, which would have put Baltimore ahead 28-27. However, the decision was overturned, ruling it an incomplete pass, much to the frustration of Ravens fans in the stadium.
During the broadcast, CBS commentator Tony Romo expressed his surprise at the ruling, saying it appeared to be a touchdown. Jim Nantz, his co-host, concurred with that assessment.
NFL Vice President of Instant Replay Mark Butterworth later explained the reversal. He noted, “The receiver controlled the ball in the air, put his right foot down, then his left foot. Control is the first aspect of the catch… The ball was pulled out before he could put his third foot down.” It was suggested that a third step was crucial to complete the catch.
This sentiment was echoed by CBS’s NFL rules analyst Gene Steratore, who indicated via social media that it seemed a third step was necessary.
After the overturned call, Baltimore couldn’t capitalize; they turned the ball over on downs. Though they had a chance to get back the ball after forcing the Steelers to punt, time ran out, and they couldn’t create another scoring opportunity. Ultimately, Pittsburgh captured the win with a final score of 27-22.
Additionally, a controversial call favored the Steelers during the fourth quarter. After a pass from Aaron Rodgers bounced back to him, it appeared Ravens defensive lineman Teddy Buchanan had intercepted it. However, that ruling was also overturned, leading to more confusion for Baltimore as they missed an advantageous position to score.
With this victory, the Steelers improved their record to 7-5, placing them at the top of the AFC North, while the Ravens fell to 6-7. It was a tough loss, highlighting the razor-thin margins in the league. Fans and analysts alike are left pondering what could have been in those electrifying moments.
