The New York Yankees were riding high after a solid performance against their rivals, the Boston Red Sox, in the Wild Card Series. They seemed poised to face off against another division rival in the AL Division Series. However, their season ended abruptly at the hands of the Tampa Bay Rays, who boasted the best record in the American League this year.
The Rays won Game 3 with a score of 4-3, completing a sweep of the Yankees in a matchup characterized by sharp fundamentals, key hitting, and just a couple of pivotal moments that went Tampa Bay’s way.
In what was essentially a do-or-die situation, the Yankees turned to veteran left-hander Max Fried, who insisted he would pitch despite the imminent arrival of his child. Sadly for him and the Yankees, Fried’s performance fell short of expectations, yielding four runs from seven hits, including two solo homers—one each to Ryan Vilade and Victor Mesa Jr.
It was Mesa Jr.’s homer that ultimately changed the game, as he sent a hanging breaking ball into the famous right-field bleachers of Yankee Stadium, pushing the score to 4-2.
However, the momentum shifted again in the bottom of the sixth inning. Attempting to spark a comeback, Anthony Volpe connected on a fastball, launching it toward left field. Fans held their breath as Mason tracked the ball. It appeared it might land in the stands, and after an impressive jump to make the catch, the play was reviewed. A fan had interfered by reaching over the fence. Instead of a two-run homer for Volpe, it was ruled an RBI double, bringing the score to 4-3.
The Rays’ bullpen stepped up significantly thereafter, and manager Kevin Cash called on closer Bryan Baker. Despite allowing a walk—his first baserunner in the series—Baker secured the final outs, completing the win by striking out Trent Grisham and setting off celebrations for Tampa Bay’s progress in the postseason.
Once again, the Yankees find themselves on the losing end of an ALDS series against an AL East rival, echoing last year’s defeat by the Toronto Blue Jays, who nearly claimed the World Series but were stopped by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
As for the Rays, they’re looking ahead, eager to return to the World Series for the first time since the shortened 2020 season. They will face the winner of the ALDS series between the Cleveland Guardians and the Chicago White Sox, with Chicago leading 2-1 after a crucial win earlier in the day.
