Reagan and Thatcher partnership established a model for Trump and Starmer's U.S.-UK relationship

President Trump Meets with President Putin the Day Before Meeting with President Zelensky

Peter Doocy, a senior White House correspondent, reports on President Donald Trump’s phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which took place a day prior to his scheduled meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

The phrase “special relationship” often refers to the bond between the U.S. and the UK, especially during the era of Nazi Germany following World War II. Some believe it became even stronger during the Cold War due to the alliance between President Ronald Reagan and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

This week, diplomats and officials gathered in London to commemorate what would have been Thatcher’s 100th birthday, reflecting on the friendship and partnership she shared with Reagan. Their alliance set a benchmark that transcended political boundaries, even amidst significant differences between the two nations.

Fred Ryan, president of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation, described them as “political soulmates” indicating their relationship was genuine, not forced. He noted that they built their bond before taking office, united in efforts to rejuvenate the economy and combat communism.

Ryan remarked, “It was more than a transaction; it became a unique, trusting relationship,” hinting it could serve as a model for future interactions. The Reagan-Thatcher alliance is renowned for its role in pressuring the Soviet Union and promoting anti-communist views, ultimately paving the way to end the Cold War. Experts at this week’s gathering emphasized that this partnership established enduring commitments for subsequent leaders to uphold the U.S.-UK relationship.

President Trump Meets with British Prime Minister Starmer to Conclude EU Trade Deal

That being said, U.S.-UK relations have seen their share of challenges. For instance, conservatives were displeased when a bust of Winston Churchill was replaced by one of Martin Luther King Jr. during the Obama and Biden administrations, a change that Trump later reversed. Concerns regarding the “special relationship” intensified after Trump’s recent election, particularly with his imposing high tariffs and critical remarks about NATO, which led some to speculate about a tilt towards American isolationism.

Nonetheless, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and President Trump have reportedly made considerable efforts to maintain an amicable relationship. Trump often references his Scottish heritage as a reason for his preference for Britain. Ryan believes that the U.S.-UK partnership is ingrained in the history of both countries, dating back to the American colonies before the Revolutionary War. “We value that special relationship and aim to nurture it,” he said, praising Trump’s ability to build solid relationships, which could serve as a guiding example.

Could a Meeting Between President Trump and President Putin Be the Next Reagan-Gorbachev Moment?

U.S.-UK relations are under scrutiny again, particularly given the stark political contrasts between Trump and Starmer. Furthermore, both nations are once more facing significant threats from Moscow, reminiscent of the Cold War period.

Trump and Reagan were able to cultivate relationships with Mikhail Gorbachev, but the peace following the Cold War has been quite fleeting, especially since Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Trump’s ongoing diplomatic overtures to Putin have sparked speculation, with some questioning whether Putin is merely placating Trump while continuing his aggressive stance.

Following a “productive” meeting in August, Trump and Putin have agreed to meet again, although the outcomes of their discussions are unclear, as recent Russian actions include escalating airstrikes on Ukraine.

Starmer has praised Trump’s efforts in initiating the first meeting with Putin but has yet to comment on the new meeting. Ryan acknowledged the varying nature of the threats posed by Russia this time but expressed hope that the established relations would enable both nations to collaborate effectively in addressing these challenges.
