Affordability Issues Expected to Ease, Says Treasury Secretary
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent mentioned on Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends” that he anticipates improvements in affordability soon, attributing these expectations to an increase in real wages.
Host Brian Kilmeade pointed out that the recent off-year election highlighted affordability concerns. He specifically referenced Zoran Mamdani’s views, noting that while people recognize the problem, finding solutions is complicated. He asked what specific strategies might lower prices on items like coffee, especially in light of tariff reductions announced by the president. He questioned what further actions could be taken to decrease coffee prices in Brazil, Vietnam, and similar markets.
Bessent responded that, although he couldn’t provide many specifics at this time, there would be significant announcements in the coming days regarding products not grown in the U.S. He mentioned that prices for coffee, bananas, and other fruits are expected to drop quickly. He remarked on the affordability challenges that have been inherited, referring to it as some of the worst inflation seen in four to five decades.
He elaborated, noting the cumulative effects of inflation under the Biden administration, pointing out that the Consumer Price Index reflected a substantial impact on working Americans. He stated that costs for essentials like food, insurance, and vehicles rose noticeably, and emphasized the administration’s efforts to bring back high-wage manufacturing jobs. He compared current efforts to those of former President Trump, who he claimed increased real wages for hourly workers.
Bessent illustrated two lines: one for inflation and the other for income. He suggested that while the inflation line is leveling off and starting to decline, the income line is set to rise, particularly in government jobs. He expects these lines to intersect in the first or second quarter of next year, leading to positive outcomes for Americans. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that this period has been challenging.
