Deutsche Bank Downgrades Intuitive Surgical Stock

Deutsche Bank has decided to downgrade Intuitive Surgical’s stock to a “sell” rating. This morning’s move reflects growing concerns among bankers regarding the potential impact of third-party remanufacturers on the company’s surgical tools business.

The new price target set by the bank estimates a downside of over 16% for the stock, hovering around $440. This presents a rather significant concern for investors.

Intuitive Surgical, recognized for its Da Vinci surgical system, has undeniably established itself as a major player in the MedTech arena, with over 10,000 systems globally performing millions of robotic surgeries each year. Nonetheless, there are clear risks tied to its business model, specifically concerning the “instruments and accessories” segment.

Recently, third-party companies have started remanufacturing previously used surgical instruments, presenting a potential challenge to new equipment sold by Intuitive. Some experts caution that this trend could result in a drastic reduction of revenue—up to 46%—from Intuitive’s instruments and accessories in the U.S.

This situation might understandably raise eyebrows for investors. I think it’s definitely something to keep in mind.

Currently, Intuitive Surgical shares are trading at a staggering 82 times their trailing revenue, which seems high for many. While analysts have forecasted a revenue growth rate of about 16% per year for the next five years, there’s a nagging doubt as to whether that number is reliable.

If you’re looking for insights, it really does appear to be a reasonable point to consider selling off Intuitive Surgical stock and pocketing some profits.

On the other hand, if you’re contemplating an investment in Intuitive Surgical, it’s wise to pause and assess the situation carefully.

Interestingly, there are numerous stocks identified by analysts that may offer better growth potential at this point—Intuitive Surgical isn’t among them. It might be worth investigating those alternatives instead.
