Rebecca De Mornay criticizes the remake of 'Hand That Rocks the Cradle': 'Betrayal'

Rebecca de Mornay on the “Cradle” Reboot

Rebecca de Mornay, the renowned actress who famously portrayed the unsettling nanny in “The Cradle Shaking Hand,” has shared her candid feelings about the film’s upcoming remake.

The 1992 thriller has received a modern update, now helmed by director Michel Garza Cervera, with Mica Monroe stepping into the role that de Mornay originally made famous.

Despite the excitement surrounding the new version, de Mornay expressed her confusion upon hearing the news. She revealed to the Post that nobody from the new cast or crew reached out to her about the revival. “I found out about it and joked that I was a bit puzzled. Someone else is taking on the role,” she remarked.

However, she is not dismissing the film entirely. “I genuinely want to see it,” she added. As she focuses on her new thriller, “St. Clair,” which also stars Bella Thorne and Ryan Phillippe, she reflected on Hollywood’s tendency to remake old classics.

De Mornay noted that although she appreciates the various adaptations of stories like “A Star is Born,” there is a sense of “laziness” in rehashing familiar plots instead of creating fresh narratives. “It seems like coming up with new stories is a challenge,” she mentioned. “I think ‘St. Clair’ is an original take, and that’s refreshing.”

While discussing her thoughts on Monroe portraying her iconic character, she shared that it’s essential for new actors to carve their own path. When asked if she had given Monroe any advice, De Mornay insisted that it’s better for young stars to develop their interpretation independently. “No, actors should discover their own approach, even if it’s been done before,” she said.

The original “Cradle” was a commercial success, earning around $140 million at the box office. The film revolved around a doctor and his pregnant wife, whose lives spiral out of control due to de Mornay’s character, leading to revenge and tragic consequences.

As for the new film, Martin Starr, who will star alongside Monroe, mentioned that filming has already concluded, but it’s unclear when it will be released. He noted that editing is already in progress but couldn’t provide a specific date.

Directed by Mitzi Peirone, “St. Clair” follows an isolated woman grappling with dissociative identity disorder, caught up in a web of murder and deception. De Mornay plays a character named Arlene ‘Gigi’ Newberry, while Phillippe portrays Detective Rich Timons. The film is set to be available for streaming on platforms like Amazon Video and Apple TV.
