Record-Setting Bluefin Tuna Caught Near San Diego

Fans of sushi in San Diego have reason to celebrate, as a world record bluefin tuna was caught off the coast of Southern California earlier this week.

Markus Medak from Shearwater Fishing managed to reel in this nearly 500-pound fish with the help of an unnamed fishing companion, using just a rod and reel.

As reported, the tuna weighed an impressive 446 pounds after being gilled and gutted, setting the record for the largest bluefin ever caught on a rod and reel.

The remarkable catch was later taken to Tunaville Market and Grocery in Point Loma, where it is sold to local restaurants.

Medak and his friend were somewhat incredulous when they saw the massive fish approach their boat. “We both got a look at it, and we didn’t even say anything,” he shared with a local news station.

Tommy Gomes, owner of Tunaville Market, expressed his excitement at the catch, saying it was a “big deal for the City of San Diego and for sportfishing.” He emphasized the need for more kids to learn fishing over playing video games. “There’s a saying, ‘The world needs more tackle boxes and less Xboxes,’” he noted, which feels pretty spot on.

Interestingly, this year’s “Super El Niño” phenomenon might have played a role in bringing such a remarkable bluefin to Southern California, potentially attracting more unusual oceanic visitors.

The fish was broken down in a live demonstration at a local restaurant recently. A representative from the restaurant confirmed that every part of the tuna would be utilized, including its spinal fluid, which is considered a delicacy in some cultures.
