Executive Search Firm Sued Following Controversial Hiring of Iowa Superintendent

A search firm known for assisting schools across the U.S. in hiring educational leaders is currently facing legal action from Iowa’s Des Moines Independent Community School District. The firm, One-Fourth Consulting, which operates as JG Consulting, is being sued for breach of contract and negligence relating to its involvement in hiring Ian Roberts, an undocumented immigrant who was arrested recently on immigration and weapon charges.

The lawsuit, filed in Polk County District Court, claims that the executive search firm’s actions led to serious consequences. Roberts was apprehended after fleeing from federal immigration authorities, and the school district is now seeking monetary compensation.

In response to the lawsuit, JG Consulting’s general counsel emphasized that over the past decade, the firm has successfully placed over 65 superintendents and 200 education executives nationwide. “We are proud of our track record in helping school districts find qualified candidates for leadership roles,” he stated, adding how significant it is to educate young people and the responsibility that comes with such roles.

Roberts’s arrest has raised questions about the hiring practices of school districts that employ JG Consulting, which has also conducted searches for other districts across several states. For example, Eanes-Westlake Innovation School District, currently enlisting the firm’s help for searching for a new superintendent, assured its community that high standards will guide their selection process.

Board President Kim McMath expressed confidence in JG Consulting, stating that the board expects thorough background information on all candidates moving forward. They seem determined to ensure that their hiring process meets the highest standards despite the current controversy.

As for Roberts, he remains in custody, facing federal charges. The Department of Homeland Security has revealed that he has a lengthy criminal history that included various offenses before his hiring by the school district.

It has come to light that Roberts initially entered the country as a “recreational visitor” in 1994, but after several stays and arrests, he applied for and received work permits at various times. However, at the time of his hiring, he did not possess a valid work permit.

Additionally, records indicate that he has previous convictions, transportation-related and otherwise, that could have raised red flags during his hiring process. The confusion surrounding his educational credentials has also surfaced, as he claimed to be an “MBA candidate” at MIT, though the institution has no record of his admission.

Despite the slew of serious allegations against him, Roberts has held various prominent roles in multiple states over the years.
