Red Bulls’ Lewis Morgan to miss extended time after knee surgery

This week, the Red Bulls were hit hard after the club announced that they would be out for at least six weeks after star forward Lewis Morgan had surgery on their left knee.

Morgan was injured during team training the day before the Red Bulls home opener against Nashville SC on March 1st.

He missed the club's final two games.

Red Bulls head coach Sandro Schwartz was somewhat vague about Morgan's return before the team announcement Wednesday.

He labeled Lewis weekly, making sure the latest issues were not involved in the surgically repaired hip that bothered him in 2023.

That injury was limited to just five MLS that year, setting the stage for a season worthy of the MLS Comeback Player of the Year award-worthy season in 2024, leading the team at 13 as Red Bull reached the MLS Cup final for the first time since 2008.

Schwartz said at a weekly pre-game press conference last week that Morgan had managed to handle the latest setback.

“We've had a very good conversation with Lewis. Our medical staff have a very good conversation with him,” Schwartz said at the time. “He's a very professional player, he's a very professional guy and works very seriously with the whole medical team.”

The Red Bulls turned Mohammed Sopho in a home opening victory on Morgan's behalf – the 20-year-old scored his first MLS goal at the start of his first career – and then went to Wonderkind Julian Hall, 16, to fill in the gap in a 0-0 draw against Atlanta last weekend.

Morgan signed a two-year contract extension before the start of the season with options for 2027 and 2028.
