The Red Sox experienced a weekend filled with highs and lows simultaneously.
On Sunday, after a game, they unexpectedly announced the trade of star player Rafael Devers to the Giants, coinciding with a sweep over their rivals, the Yankees.
This move has led many Red Sox fans to criticize the team for being stingy, showcasing their frustration with yet another emotional roller coaster.
Jared Carrabis, who hosts the “Baseball Is Dead” podcast, expressed his thoughts about the trade on X, questioning how the team plans to fill Devers’ shoes.
“How will they replace Rafael Devers?” Carrabis wondered aloud, pointing out both the nature of the trade and the timing of it.
Bill Simmons, founder of The Ringer, shared a theory on X regarding the possible motivations behind the deal.
Owner John Henry, who also owns Liverpool, a successful soccer team, may have his focus split. Simmons suggested the trade could help finance Henry’s recent acquisition of midfielder Florian Wharts, with Liverpool reportedly paying $100 million for him.
Devers had been at odds with the team during spring training after switching from third base to designated hitter to accommodate Alex Bregman, who had just signed with the Red Sox.
This isn’t unfamiliar territory for fans; the franchise has previously traded star players, an issue that continues to plague their supporters.
Mookie Betts was sent to the Dodgers with three players who didn’t pan out for the Red Sox before the 2020 season. Betts, in the last year of his contract, eventually signed a hefty deal with Los Angeles and helped them clinch two World Series titles.
“I still woke up in shock over the Devers trade,” said Dave Portnoy, founder of Barstool, in a post on X. “If you’re aiming to win, trading your best hitter mid-season is not the way to go. John Henry and minority owner LeBron James have turned the Red Sox into something unrecognizable.”
It seems history is repeating itself in Boston. One can only hope this time things turn out differently.
