BOSTON — Red Sox Streak Ends After Impressive Run

The Boston Red Sox haven’t had a 15-game winning streak since 1946, the same year Ted Williams secured the MVP title and led the team to an American League championship.

On Wednesday, they kicked off a doubleheader with a 6-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles, matching that long-standing record. However, the joy was short-lived as they fell 5-1 in the evening game, bringing their impressive streak to an end.

“It’s been a fantastic ride. A 15-game winning streak is no small feat,” first baseman Willson Contreras shared in the subdued clubhouse. “There’s nothing to feel down about. We’ve got to take pride in our accomplishments and continue playing well.”

After the loss, interim manager Chad Tracy wanted to address the team, but seeing Contreras engaged in conversation with pitcher Sonny Gray, he decided to let the veteran take the lead.

“We knew this streak would eventually come to an end,” Tracy remarked.

He also recognized the streak’s historical impact. “I’ve read up on it. Ted Williams was part of that era, so I’m aware of the significance. It’s impressive to reach such a milestone,” he noted.

Post-victory, as is tradition after wins at Fenway Park, the Red Sox celebrated with “Dirty Water” by the Standells playing in the background, taking a moment to enjoy the atmosphere.

They also cherished their time together in the clubhouse. “The players were clearly thrilled, and we wanted to soak in the experience,” Tracy added. “Everyone is definitely enjoying themselves.”

Earlier this season, following a rough 10-17 start, the Red Sox parted ways with coach Alex Cora. They had a moment of despair after a 10-2 loss to Washington on July 1, landing them at the bottom of the American League East with 37 wins and 48 losses.

However, it took nearly three weeks, including the All-Star break, before Boston (52-49) faced another defeat.

Interestingly, Tracy has become the first manager since the 19th century to guide a team to at least 15 consecutive wins without starting the season.

After Caleb Durbin tied the game with a home run against Baltimore on Monday, he began counting the outs left in the game. “I think I was counting down to the seventh inning a bit,” he smiled.

Following the final out, left fielder Jalen Duran reflected on the crowd’s support as he connected with center fielder Sedan Rafaela and right fielder Wylya Abreu. “It’s enjoyable to look around and take in the moment,” he said.

This 126th season is special for many within the organization. Durbin remarked, “Considering where I was and how long this franchise has been around, this has been incredible.”

Orioles manager Craig Albanaz, who grew up following the Red Sox just 45 miles away in Fall River, Mass., commended the team. “A 15-game heater is quite an achievement. Winning even a single game in the big leagues is tough, so winning 15 in a row is impressive,” he said.
