Sonny Gray Leaves Game with Hamstring Injury

During Monday’s Patriots Day matchup against the Detroit Tigers, Sonny Gray departed in the third inning due to a strained right hamstring. It’s anticipated that he will be placed on the injured list.

The Red Sox faced a tough start to the season, sitting at 9-13, before welcoming the Yankees to Fenway Park for their first series of the year.

Gray, who stirred up some rivalry when he joined the Red Sox in the off-season, didn’t hold back on his feelings about his past with the Yankees.

In December, he expressed, “It feels good to go to a place where it’s easy to hate the Yankees.”

Interestingly, Gray wasn’t slated to pitch during the three-game clash against his former team.

Things took a turn for the worse after he walked Gleyber Torres. Right after, he began bending and straightening his right leg, clearly looking uncomfortable.

Pitching coach Andrew Bailey and catcher Carlos Narvaez made a visit to check on him. Shortly thereafter, coach Alex Cora and a trainer came out. Despite a few warm-up pitches following some discussion, Gray exited the game, leaving the Red Sox ahead 2-1.

“Sonny is going to have an MRI Tuesday,” Cora remarked after Boston’s 8-6 victory. “We don’t think it’s serious.”

However, after testing his leg, Gray realized he couldn’t continue. “When I threw that last 3-2 pitch, I felt my right hamstring grabbing, like I had experienced before,” he explained. “I threw a warm-up pitch and felt the same tightening again.”

This isn’t the first time Gray has faced hamstring issues; he dealt with similar problems in 2022 and 2024.

Gray commented, “I’ve been managing it for a while. It just happens every now and then. I need to keep an eye on it since it first happened.”

The Red Sox are reportedly looking to bring Tyler Samaniego up to take Gray’s spot on the roster.
