Reddit’s Founder Reflects on Immigration Laws and Website’s Existence

Alexis Ohanian, the entrepreneur behind Reddit, expressed significant thoughts online about the creation of his platform. Reddit is known for its vibrant discussions on nearly every topic, often with progressive moderation on various pages.

Founded in 2005, Ohanian described Reddit as the “front page of the Internet.” He stepped down from its board of directors in 2020, encouraging the company to honor George Floyd’s legacy by promoting diversity within the board.

Recently, Ohanian stated that he believes Reddit may not have come into existence if federal immigration laws had been enforced before his birth. Born in New York City in 1983 to a U.S.-born father and a German mother who was in the country illegally, his background prompted these reflections.

He remarked that his mother had overstayed her visa, which he likened to the actions of “masked thugs” who forcibly remove people, referring to ICE agents. “If ICE had come for her, Reddit would not exist,” he remarked, sharing personal context surrounding his upbringing.

While he acknowledged the importance of border security, Ohanian advocates for amnesty for illegal immigrants. He believes that security measures should not endanger lives, suggesting that a reasonable legalization policy could benefit hardworking immigrants.

He noted, “This is not about open borders; it’s about smart and humane immigration reform.” He highlighted the value of immigrants who wish to contribute positively to society, pointedly stating they should not be apprehended forcefully.

Some, like former Republican Arizona Senate candidate Blake Masters, criticized Ohanian’s views. Masters remarked, “The great argument for enforcing immigration laws is that Reddit wouldn’t exist if they had enacted immigration laws,” drawing upon a broader critique.

Ohanian defended his position, mentioning his “market capitalization of $38 billion” as evidence that even children of undocumented immigrants can achieve great things. However, he faced a mix of support and skepticism online. Some commenters found his logic flawed, questioning the rights of individuals asking for citizenship after overstaying their visas.

Tech expert Josh Centers even speculated that, without Reddit, other independent forums would have emerged, suggesting the internet landscape would still thrive in various ways.
