On Sunday, Governor Wes Moore (D-MD) commented that President Donald Trump is “facing the people” on CBS, suggesting that the president is “trying to manipulate the election.”
Here are some excerpts:
Margaret Brennan: I want to ask about your party’s stance on rezoning or gerrymandering. You’ve mentioned hesitance to discuss it, but regarding your state, I know you have all options on the table. There’s only one Republican seat represented by Andy Harris. Are you thinking about redrawing the lines in Maryland?
Moore: Absolutely. When I say all options are on the table, I mean it.
Brennan: Are you looking into this actively right now?
Moore: Yes, I think we have to.
Brennan: What do you personally think?
Moore: I believe it’s necessary. This situation embodies what people despise about politics. The US president has, similar to his actions in Georgia, called for voter subscribers to support him more. It’s still happening. He’s summoned councils and insists on finding more council districts.
Brennan: That’s true, but you know Democrats, like Gavin Newsom, are doing similar things. I’ve seen instances of this backfire, even in New York. Are you sure you want to pursue this?
Moore: I want to ensure that there’s a fair map and fair representation, where politicians aren’t choosing their voters, but voters choose their representatives. It’s crucial to have an equitable map. Additionally, recognizing that his policies may not hold up in elections, if the president is attempting to tilt the scales to manipulate the election, we need to keep all options available and ensure voters’ voices are heard.
Brennan: Do you feel the single district represented by Republicans in Maryland is actively represented?
Moore: Looking at the national landscape, less than 10% of Congressional seats are competitive. The average margins of victory in many states exceed 20-30%. This indicates the presence of significant gerrymandering, and we must introduce fairness into the process. All options should indeed be considered in Maryland.
Brennan: And you mentioned monitoring this issue?
Moore: Yes, we definitely are.
