SEATTLE — The Mets lost a number of pitchers this season who are either not ready to return or still not ready to return, but one returned on Saturday.
Reid Garrett, who has been on the disabled list for the past month with elbow swelling, was scheduled to return to action Saturday night against the Mariners at T-Mobile Park.
Through the first three months of the season, the right-hander has faced three different pitchers — some great, some disappointing and some okay — and the Mets are hoping he can be an impactful setup pitcher.
To make room for Garrett, the Mets traded left-hander Alex Young to Triple-A Syracuse.
Young pitched eight scoreless innings on Friday night.
With this change in the lineup, Danny Young became the only left-handed relief pitcher in the bullpen.
Garrett has appeared in 36 games for the Mets this season, posting a 3.64 ERA with 63 strikeouts in 42 innings.
He returned after appearing in two minor league rehab games with Syracuse.
Sean Reed-Foley and Dedniel Nunez are also relief pitchers hoping to return.
Reid Foley is on a minor league rehab assignment at Syracuse University rehabbing from a shoulder injury, and Nunez is expected to be back on the mound soon.
The Mets lost Brooks Raley and Drew Smith for the season due to torn ulnar collateral ligaments, and starting pitchers Christian Scott and Kodai Senga are on the disabled list.
Scott, who was diagnosed with a UCL sprain, is asymptomatic and could begin a throwing program next week, but it remains to be seen whether he will require Tommy John surgery.
Senga is suffering from a calf injury and is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season, but he could return if the Mets reach the postseason.
With Friday’s loss, the Mets are now six games above .500.
The team has yet to win more than eight games above .500 since the 2022 season.
